Invisible audience

Presence of a visible audience.

Imagine a play, a dance of ballet or a show or comedy. The actors have a place to perform, which is in front of the audience. They prepare their whole lives to act. They do numerous rehearsals, plot changes, and expensive costumes. They make sure the stage is well lit, and elevated above the ground so everyone can see. On the day of the performance, they get ready in the backstage putting a final make up before entering the arena. And they do a breathtaking performance leaving a visible audience with an awe. This is an example of a visible audience, but where is the invisible audience?

Presence of an invisible audience.

Invisible audience is invisible. So, many of us do not know it is present. However, artists and creative workers, even scientists spending their entire lives cracking millennial problems know the presence of an invisible audience. Imagine our actors while they rehearse their play. They do this before the actual performance begins, to an invisible audience before the play begins. Imagine an artist painting. He does this in front of an invisible audience, before the artwork displayed in the gallery in front of a visible audience. A worker in a co-operate office function to impress his/her boss or colleagues. They try to entertain an invisible audience by doing this, even though to the actual audience, you are just a piece of domino, which can be replaced.

Uses of invisible audience.

The invisible audience gives a motivation for anyone to work on a task which gives a delayed reward of appreciation. The anticipation of this reward makes us work hard and longer hours. In fact, most of our lives we have been following signals of this invisible audience to change our direction in life.

Dangers of an invisible audience.

The natural tendency to follow this invisible audience is dangerous. The ruminations going through our minds when we practice our performance in life, is not real at all. Often this is far different from the visible audience. Invisible audience is speculative, and always rewarding. Presence of an invisible audience might even make someone anxious. But the visible audience on the other hand behave differently. We cannot predict how they would behave watching our performance as correlation with this visible and invisible audience is poor. Often invisible audience misguide us. As a real audience is really unpredictable in their reactions, speculation with the invisible audience is a bad practice.

Self-sufficiency is the key to tackle with invisible audience.

Imagine you are self-sufficient. Self-sustained and self-fulfilled. This is a real happy place to be, as the external audience, either visible or invisible would not affect the act, performance or the art. There would be no validation you seek from the boss, neither from your invisible parents and not from your family. Not even when they are present, not when they are not present. There would be only an action, which you would do regardless, which is the only thing that matters in life and only thing we should focus on improving. Our real character will be visible to us when we perform without any audience, visible or invisible.
