- The butterfly effect, hurricanes and kindness.
hurricanemilton2024 "Mr. Milton woke up one morning feeling dizzy from hangover. He could not walk hence started spinning. Until he reached super speed and crashed into the kitchen. Oh! pots and pans they flew from the wind that blew. Neighbours saw him in morning bulleting news." Story of butterflies. I was travelling 100km/hr. in the car the other day, through the vast planes of eastern province. Only occasional heard of cows to slow down the traffic, otherwise the easy flat driving. Butterflies, they did not slow down the traffic. They were too small to see, until they were very close, and an impact is unavoidable. They were crossing the road in hundreds, not thousands. So, I may have been guilty in injuring a dozen of them. What is my verdict? It brought me back to, my childhood, when we used to play in a nearby playground, in the month January, we used to see butterflies. Hundreds of yellow butterflies flew across the playground. They travel solo, not in groups, hence I am sure adults have not seen them. We children had eyes to spot these small flying objects easily, as they would fascinate us. We ran after butterflies, as their path of flying was not straight it was difficult. And they were too fast to catch. Very rarely they would land on grass and once or twice I have caught them. How much gently I would do it, but they would get injured, and some of them, I am not sure that they have ever flown afterwards. I just needed to see them closer, that's all. If you would like to listen more on butterflies, I suggest you can listen to Sir David Attenborough's narrative on Metamorphosis of butterflies. How they transform themselves from an ugly caterpillar, into a beautiful butterfly, like in a fairy tale. However, this article is about chaos theory, hence let's remind this to ourselves. Chaos theory or butterfly effect. Chaos theory is a branch of mathematics that explores how small changes in initial conditions can lead to vastly different outcomes in complex systems. This concept is famously illustrated by the butterfly effect, which suggests that the flap of a butterfly’s wings in one part of the world could eventually cause a tornado in another. The term was popularized by meteorologist Edward Lorenz in the 1960s when he discovered that tiny variations in his weather models led to significantly different results. Essentially, chaos theory reveals the inherent unpredictability in systems that are highly sensitive to initial conditions, challenging the notion that we can always predict future events with precision. Previously, I tried to compare what is happening in life, as explained to chaos theory . I compared that the order we see in our lives are just like, some apparent patterns visible, and explained in chaos theory (Lorenz factors). Butterfly effect and Hurricane Milton What a great time to write about butterfly Effect. Mr. Milton has just swept through the Florida. And it had played havoc like a drunken man in the kitchen. he has no right to be there like he did. And the lives of people have changed for months following. According to chaos theory, maybe I am responsible, by changing the trajectory of the butterflies who flew across the road last month. Maybe they have changed the pattern of some molecules in atmosphere and ultimately created Mr. Milton. What is my verdict Now? Nobody would punish me. As when we travel through time, what we essentially do is change some of the conditions of the state of this complex system of universe. And nobody can point out the exact cause of the origin of the Mr. Milton. As, they are so much interconnected. This is the argument I have expressed in the article reasons beyond reasons . However, the fact remains, although not directly, small action small change can trigger an avalanche of changes over time. Or Snowball effect. It is true for hurricanes, and it is true for wars. It is true for global peace as well. This is why your mindful deed matters. Your one step, outside that door matters. Your simple kind actions matter. Nobody knows how long we have been this sparkle of energy, which is called consciousness. Maybe we have been travelling, so long and our consciousness is now big enough, ripe enough to understand even the universe, and even the consciousness itself. let us be kind to ourselves and look back at our lives for a small change today. Let us take one deep breath with mindfulness.
- It takes courage to look at the sky- story of bravery.
Background You walk on the busy road, among many other, daily workers, who try to reach their homes as quickly as possible after a hard-working day. It is almost dark, and the streetlights are on, some are busy buying a quick dinner. Among many who run toward buses, cars and trams, you walk slowly and for a second take your eyes across the gloomy sky. And you notice the abnormally huge, full moon. Just being present in the sky. And you remember that it takes a lot of courage for an ordinary man among thousands in the city to look at the sky. Simply they do not have time! And it reminded you the story of bravery. Story of bravery - the merchant. A long long time ago, there was a wise merchant. He was travelling with a heard of hundreds of camels, trading goods from town to town. And yearly, he would take a long journey across a vast desert which takes 50 nights to cross. As it is too hot during the day, they rest in the daytime, and at night the stars guide them with directions. And there were these stargazers who travel in the front of the group, who showed the way. That year was one of the hottest in decades when he took the journey with his heard of camels and men. And it took 49 days for him to travel to the edge of the desert, and the animals were tired as well as all his men, and the ones who lead the group, fell asleep on the 50th day. They did not have water to last another day, and it did not matter as they were supposed to reach the town next day. However following morning unfortunately, they found out that they were reached the place where they stayed the last night. Camels they have turned around as they had no one to show the way. Exhausted of heat and dehydration, many men had no energy to carry on for another day. Not without water. And animals were dying too. The merchant took a walk with few brave men of his group and was carefully looking for any sign of water. And he noticed a small green plant on a little sand mound. He asked his men to dig a hole. With hope they started to dig, and dig, and dig and the burning sun burnt all their courage. As the hole grew deeper, they were losing hope, and they met a dead end when they encountered a big rock at the bottom of the newly dug well. They gave up and it was depressing end, and they all, thought that they were doomed and never would see their families again. But the merchant thought otherwise. He jumped into the well and lied down. Kept his head on the rock and listened. With a smile he rose up and asked his men to be brave, gather all their courage to break the stone. And one man, stepped up, although exhausted he lifted the enormous hammer and slammed few times. Once the rock was cracked a gush of water came out. With delight everyone rejoiced and were saved at the end of the day. They successfully completed their journey. Story of bravery - The lion and the rabbit Once there was a rabbit. He was a nice rabbit, innocent rabbit and a cute one. He was sleeping under a tree, one day when it was about to rain. And suddenly there was a huge Noice, and the rabbit woke up in fear, and he saw the roaring sky coming down, as if it was falling down. "Oh my God! the sky is falling down" and he started to run shouting in fear. Hearing his screams and horror, other rabbits started to run. And they all believed the innocent nice, cute rabbit who has never lied to them before. Next were the Deers, they joined the rabbits. And this was becoming a sight to see, as buffalos followed the Deers, a group of fox, squirrels, peacocks, giraffes' elephants. Everyone was screaming in horror. The lion who was resting in his den woke up. Hearing all the Noice of animals he came out and roared. He was the king of the jungle, and animals stopped running. They were all looking afraid. The lion asked, why are you running? Some said, the Sky is falling down, it's the end of the world. The lion king did not believe this. So, he asked who saw it? There was nobody, but the elephants said they heard it from the Giraffes. And they said it was peacocks. And at the end after a long line of questioning the lion found out that it was the innocent, nice, cute rabbit who started all this havoc. And the lion offered to investigate this. He walked back all the way back to the place where the rabbit was sleeping before it all started and noticed, a huge coconut fallen on to a big leaf, and at that moment a lightning struck. And the lion knew. It was just a bad combination of impact it made with the lightning made the illusion of sky falling down, to the innocent rabbit who was day dreaming. And after the lion king explained what happened all the animals calmed down and went back to their homes. End of story of bravery. If you would like to be brave like the lion, I suggest you can start asking why ?
- Conquer yourself - Rene Descartes
Conquering countries. Conquering countries is easy, compared to conquering yourself. That is why it has happened over many times in our human history. It was just yesterday I watched a documentary on how Saddam Houssain, conquered Kuwait, for a brief period of time. You just need to be having a big army and a corrupted regimen; a cruel dictator can easily conquer a country. Compared to this conquering yourself is difficult. Even for the dictator himself. This is the exact message I have illustrated in the previous article, weak dictators of our history . Conquering yourself - Rene Descartes Can anyone conquer your body? Have you seen Bruce Lee, playing table tennis with two players with his Nun chuck? I read that he was short in one leg, however he could throw a punch to bring down a six-foot fighter. He had mastered conquering of the body and mind. If we try to wiggle the Nun chuck, the way he did it, we will injure ourselves. So, when Rene Descartes said, "Conquer yourself rather than the world" I could not agree more. Because I believe that this is the only thing a rational person could try to do in this chaotic world. It is not an easy task to conquer yourself. At least for me. And I believe it is harder than conquering anything. How can we do this, and why it is difficult? The problem is our monkey mind. Although we believe that we have full control of our thoughts and actions only when you start trying to conquer yourself that you would notice it is not so. During day-to-day activities we are so much distracted to see this process, but when you sit down to relax you would see. In meditation and mindfulness Imagine you try to meditate. Sit on a one place, close your eyes and start your attention on your breath. After a while the attention starts to drift. On sounds, on little discomforts in the body or on past experiences and images. It seems keeping attention on breath is the hardest thing to do. So, who controls your mind? if you are not doing it. If your own thoughts are uncontrollable, why do we think we have a free will. I can see it makes me uneasy. The monkey mind does not allow me to rest even when that is my intention of meditation. And if I started to fight against this nature, it gets worse, and I will have to do what the monkey says. I have seen great masters of mindfulness have given us the wisdom to overcome this situation. We have to acknowledge those sensations and 'Let it go'. The acknowledging and not fighting is the key to calming down the monkey. Why Rene Descartes is wrong. Walking meditation
- Diabetic Foot - Philosophy of perception
Diabetic Foot. I was seated for a half an hour today to write an article and, It started to hurt my legs. I felt my sciatic nerve getting compressed too much from my own weight sandwiched between my pelvic bone and the plastic chair, and I did not move until I was done. Maybe I was in the zone of 'Flow'. So, I ended up having a temporary paresthesia when I tried to walk. Initially it was tingling sensation and then it went totally numb for five minutes. And gladly I was mindful about it hence made following observations. I am sure most of you would relate this with your past similar experience. Specially if you have some 'peripheral neuropathy' like in long standing diabetic patients. This is one part of having so called 'Diabetic foot'. As this is a philosophical article we do not have to go into details of diagnoses and causes, however knowing this would help us to understand the philosophy of perception. When I tried to walk, during so called numb period of my paresthesia, I felt like I am walking on a cushion. While actually I was walking on the tiles. I knew the sensation I am getting is wrong. I should feel the tiles 'hard' not soft. However, I could not deny, nothing has changed except my perception. This provokes some deep questions about philosophy of perception. Diabetic foot and Philosophy of Perception. I will stick to the facts first and separate my judgements on what happened. facts. The temporary paralysis has caused, some change in my perception of foot nerves. However, tiles, remains the same, Foot remains grossly same. Same tile, which was 'Hard' before is now 'Soft'. If I forget my previously learned idea that 'Tiles are hard'. I can now say 'Tiles are soft'. And this is true to the whole time my legs are numb. Tiles are hard' Is a judgment made in my consciousness. Although I felt hardness is in the tiles. This is a wrong idea. As hardness is not a property of the tile. It is a property of the brain. So, if we stick to the above facts we can say. Tiles are not hard or soft. Or we can say tiles are both hard and soft. Not think about this conclusion again. Tiles are not hard or soft. Tiles are both hard and soft. Imagine you go to your friends now, in a coffeehouse, you look at the tiles on the floor and say, "These tiles are not hard, or soft". And your friends will say you are mad. What nonsense are you talking about. But I was neither drunk nor was dreaming when I observed above facts. And we have done a rational conclusion with true facts. So, what is wrong? Let's expand this into a mental experiment now. Let's imagine a person who had a peripheral neuropathy all his life. He would perceive tiles as soft objects. They are soft, when he touches and walk on them. He would touch cloths and feel the same. But, as he has vision, he would see, Tile is not bendable, while cloth is. And if you throw a tile at someone, it will harm the person, but not the cloth. But obviously he is disadvantaged against survival. Similarly, some patients with peripheral neuropathy would not feel pain, or temperature in their hands and legs. They would injure themselves, burn themselves and later get even amputated due to these injuries getting worse. As you can see 'The tile being soft is wrong, as it clearly has a disadvantage on survival.' In conclusion we can say that, saying tile is hard is wrong. Tile seems neither hard, nor soft. It's just interaction with it generates the sensation. Truely speaking "Hardness" is only associated with this interaction. Hence, if there is no interaction, no Hardness. But somehow our minds tend to forget these simple facts and attribute hardness is a persistent property. However, it is temporary, when we understand it lasts only for the duration of the interaction. You can try this yourself. Look at some simple object on your table and understand why it feels hard, when even you are not touching it? The sky. I was looking at the sky, from the same spot, two days in a row. Yesterday sky seems to be beautiful than today. There was a golden cloud far away in the horizon, while today it was only gloomy clouds. Like the sky is sad. And I noticed all of these are just assumptions made by the mind process. The sky is not inherently good or bad. Just like a tile which is not hard or soft. It's just my mind playing tricks.
- Religion as a replacement for our unawareness -evolution of religion
Evolution of religion. I saw this wonderful post on evolution of religion over time. I cannot post it as I am not sure about the origin of the post. But the message is clear, and it is as follows. First, they started to worship rocks Then they worshipped animals Next Invisible animals in the sky. Invisible people in the sky You get the hang of it right? Next comes the invisible god. Next, they worshipped messengers of these invisible gods. Messengers of Messengers of invisible Gods. Finally, self-discovery that you are all that. I could not agree more on this evolution of the religion. And I see lots and lots of our fellow humans are still stuck in the evolutionary loop. And I think the abundance of information on the simple truths about life has converting mass populations into the self-discovery more and more. Hence philosophy matters, as it challenges our ancestors believes, who made these stories gathered around fires during fearful nights. Just like in the sausage party . More importantly I would like to focus on the last bit of it. Which is self-discovery. How do anyone discover him/herself. What does it mean it is to discover self? Explaining this is just like the Allegory of the cave . Because we all are stuck in our own prisons of mind , truth what is true for me, is not true for you. And there is no way of showing what I experience to anyone. Imagine a simple truth as a taste of salt. This is salt. No doubt that you know salt. But can you explain, or let anyone know that what you feel when you, taste it? We can say it 'tastes salty'. Similarly, we cannot exactly know what other person knows when they taste the salt. Although it seems we are living in a one world, it seems it is just a relative truth. As there are in fact infinitely many different worlds out there, as long as individual consciousness is concerned. That is one way to break our common default, thinking pattern. However, I would say we still have to look beyond. We have to look beyond time . Look beyond what we see . And when we look at things in these different angles, the way we see things differs. It seems like it is true that a book read by thousand people is thousand books. The question is if that is true, was there only one book or thousands of them? The path to self-discovery. The path to self-discovery is a tedious one. It is not direct dive from here to there. Nobody can give you a set of clear instructions. As you can see, the path seen by thousand individuals is thousand paths, not a single one. But the tool which we use to the self-discovery is clear. That is mindfulness. And you will need some wisdom to accompany mindfulness to kick start. Once this is done, it should be a natural slide. So, awareness is not a choice, it is the lifestyle of the future generation. And it is a replacement for religion, for the intellectual. And definitely it is not about sitting in one place and looking at your breath chanting 'Oooom'. I would say, mindfulness is the new science. I do not want you to believe me. Hence, I invite you to read, thousands of philosophers who were there, who were able to look inside themselves and glimpse into their so-called soul. What a better place to start, than David foster Wallace and his famous speech ' this is water ' One day two young fish swam, and on the way, they met an older fish who swam the other way. The older fish said. "Good morning boys. How is the Water?" Two young fish swam a little more and one of them turn to the other and spoke. "What the hell is water" So, if you haven't seen the water, I suggest you be aware until you see this. Like Wallace himself claims, "I do not come here as the old fish to brag about water."
- Good and evil - Megamind - philosophy
Have you watched the movie Megamind? As you already Know I am a fan of animation films. I used to sleep at 5 am watching movies all night, and go for lectures, when I was in university. Yes, it seems pathological, but it happened. I never thought I would write about those movies after a decade later, but here I am. Writing philosophy based on movies I have watched. This is another such episode. Background. In the movie, the super villain Megamind tries to win against the Metro-man, who is the superhero. And again, and again they fight in battles after battles, and Megamind loses every one of them until one fine day, when Megamind was able to defeat and 'Kill' the Metro-man. The movie is about what happens after that. Once the Metro-man is down, the Megamind, after playing some havoc, in his newly conquered Metro-City, gets bored, and spend time miserably. Until another villain appears. Who is eviler than him. What happens after that? Well, now he had to become a hero and start saving the Metro-city from this pure evil. And he does at the end, with some help from the Metro-man. Alright, this is not a good summary of the movie, I agree, but enough for the purpose of discussing some philosophy. Beyond Good and Evil. If you look carefully about the fact, when compared with the evilest, the evil seems to be good. So, this is commonly found phenomena although massively ignored. If you read my previous article of vegetable story, you may already know the fact that, becoming a bad vegetable in the good pile of vegetables is better than becoming a good vegetable in the stinking pile of vegetables. I have given several examples in that article, but here is another. It is common like in our country, elections are corrupted as well. As often it happens when there are only corrupted politicians are in both governing party and the opposition, we have to choose between the less corrupted one. However, compared to another affluent country, that is not a good choice, but people would not understand that. The unfortunate situation is although it is a simple fact, the pattern has repeated over many times in the history of countries, until thousands are killed of wars or famine, when only the people make their own movements for better governance. But, already too late for prevent the tragedy. Now it is time to ask What is the message? What is the Megamind philosophy? One fact is Good, and evil is not simple as two sides of a coin. Often it happens it is a spectrum, like all the other spectrums of nature. Even the time would tell that some things we thought good earlier would lead to evil later. A good example of turnover of generations from a affluence to poor. "As we passed through hard times, we build a nation which is triumph in success, our next generation is not having those hard times, and they would continue to be successful, but for our Childrens of children, life would be too easy that they will lose everything, and hard times will come back earthed again." Another fact is that when what we think 'good' is really bad, when we compared with another good thing, can we call it good? It seems relative, as always there is something better. Even good seems to be hiding some evil! These are just facts for you to think about in understanding the nature. It is obvious they cannot be argued, true in a trail. Hence, the practical value in day-to-day life is limited. That I think is the beauty of the philosophy and our consciousness, so that we can stretch our boundaries of wisdom without harming others. So, Follow the rules!
- Ignorance is a bliss - Sylvia Plath
Teachers, they influence us in early life. And when they do good, it shapes our future, markedly. Just like a tree, in early life, when it is bend with the sunlight. For the whole life of the tree, the curves will remain visible, and it will add to the beauty of the nature. One of my teachers said, 'Look out for the ones, who love nature, look out for the ones who cry, there are few, but they will have a pure heart.' I thought, if that is true, why? Consider the following saying by Sylvia Plath. “It's a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It's much easier to be somebody else or nobody at all .” — Sylvia Plath When I read this, I agreed on the first part of it. It is a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. It takes time and effort to build a career. A self that tallies with your own image. Mostly there are flaws, and we all agree with ourselves to forgive us in these flaws, otherwise the clash can lead us to unhappy places. It is hell of a responsibility to be a mother, be a father, be a child, a good one. It is a hell of a responsibility to be a lawyer, a policeman or a carpenter. It is a hell of a responsibility to be a ruler and a follower . Do you agree? If you take whatever you are doing seriously with consciousness, it is a hell of a responsibility to be yourself. But everyone, complaints it is a hell of a responsibility. But everyone wants to be somebody right? They all want to be somebody. But I do not agree it is much Easier to be somebody else or nobody. If you think becoming nobody is becoming a follower, not a leader. Or some hidden forgotten figure in a co-operate scale company. I would say, no. That is also somebody. A Begger is somebody. It is hell of a responsibility to be a Begger. You have to give up all your shame, of being dependent, and put your hand on the face of people, with a fake sad face, to beg for something, to keep your always hungry stomach at rest and always empty pockets with coins. It is a hell of a responsibility to be a Begger. So, if that is not nobody, who is nobody? Who is nobody? Nobody is someone who do not want to be somebody. Who is looking inside of himself and understand the somebody in them. Who is questioning this somebody until he figures out that there is nobody. And still capable of living with the society with full of somebodies and following the rules of nature help others to realize the concept of nobody. Who is capable of becoming such a self? Those are the people who looks out at nature and isolate themselves with that nature for the purpose of understanding simple truths it provides. Who cries not only when they are in pain, but when a small ant drowns in the sink when he flushes the water down the drain. And ask question why? Why it is painful inside. Those are the philosophers, and seekers, who asked the questions why one child of same parents becomes a lawyer when the other becomes a psychopath. Ignorance is a bliss. This is where ignorance is a bliss. I see majority of our society is grossly ignorant to these facts. Facts of nature that is cruel enough to feed innocent chicks of a hummingbird to a slithering snake. A nature that is cruel enough to imprison ourselves to a cobweb created in our own minds. If you do not get these thoughts, it is a bliss! You can lead a wonderful life, of happiness and joy if you are content with what you have. You can cry when you are hurt and you can smile when you are happy, just like everyone else. And you will die, as somebody, without ever understanding, the nature who tricked nobody.
- Simple truths - David Foster Wallace
This blog is about mindfulness. That is a simple truth. Why? Because mindfulness is the key to all other truths. You may disagree. You may say, not at all. Truth is written in books, in English. I would not disagree with you. I would agree that what is written in books, is truth. What you believe is truth. But it is just a relative truth. Relative to you. Consider the following quote by David Foster Wallace. " The Truth has nothing to do with knowledge and everything to do with awareness of what is so real and essential, what is so hidden in plain sight all around us all the time, that we have to keep reminding ourselves, 'This is water, this is water.' " - David Foster Wallace This quote is from David Foster Wallace’s famous commencement speech, “This is Water,” delivered at Kenyon College in 2005. In this speech, Wallace emphasizes the importance of awareness and mindfulness in everyday life. He suggests that the most significant truths are often the ones that are hardest to see because they are so familiar and omnipresent. By saying “This is water,” he encourages us to recognize and appreciate the fundamental aspects of our existence that we often take for granted. If you would think truths are written in books. That is a misleading, idea. As I have discussed earlier in philosophy of language , it is just a tool to deliver a message. But this message is always erroneous as the language is not a natural 'thing'. If you really want to know simple truths about life you may want to tap into the awareness or mindfulness as they call it nowadays. Does this mean you have to chant, "this is water, this is water", every time you drink a cup of tea? Definitely not! Again, mindfulness is also a tool. Theory will point out everything is relative, but its only mindfulness which will show that everything is. I can show you some simple facts. Let's do the same example given by Mr. Wallace. Simple truths about a glass of water. Let's look at a glass of water. Imagine you have a glass of water in front of you. Maybe you already have a one. And you can use some other simple object you see. There is no doubt you see the glass of water. If we ask 1000 people what is in front of you, they will answer, a glass of water. That would be the correct answer in any scientific session. Now, let's be 100% true to ourselves in answering following questions. Close your eyes, and now, if someone asked you is there a glass of water? what would be your honest answer. I am sure some of you will say yes. And others will say, I do not know. If you are in the former group, I would ask you to stop reading the article further and come back when you are more honest at the end of your life and read the rest of it. Because for a 100% honest person, they cannot answer the question with a yes or no. Because for a glass of water to be present in front of them, they must first be aware of it via their sensations. Once the sensations are cut off, there is only a doubt. If you want to read more on this phenomenon, I suggest you read the article on consciousness . Now this is a simple truth. So, I have proven that the glass of water in front of you is a relative truth to your consciousness. Because its presence is doubtful, just when you close your eyes. There are more ways we can see such simple truths about a glass of water. As it is interesting I will show you another. Imagine you drop all the water on the table and keep the glass on the table. Now, everything you called "Glass of water" are still there on the table. But where is the "Glass of water" now. You would say, it is just a name for the formation, of 'water inside the glass'. The problem is this applies to everything. This applies not only to the Glass of water, but This also applies to the water, water molecules, atoms, subatomic particles, the glass, silicon, atoms, subatomic particles. All these are just names. What is truly out there, as a glass of water is something we can never see. Because we can only see some abstract level which is far above than what is truly there. No matter how much the science is going to improve in future generations, they would still be stuck in some level of abstraction. Awareness plays a role in identifying and showing us these simple relative truths about life. Like I have said earlier, all written information is partially true. Hence, you will have to see for yourself with this information to grasp the true meaning of these words, which were passed forward by our past generations.
- Power of free will and evolution.
What will you do, if you have the power of free will? Well, you have been already doing that. We all are believers of free will. As individuals, as a society. This is the basis of all the rules and regulations, although we did not mention it. We agree we have a free will and by these social conventions we agree to respect others free will. Not only humans also animals. Hence even animal ethics. So, fundamentally it is wrong to ask such a question like "Do you have a free will?" If you do not believe that everything will crumble. You can read more on such deterministic worlds in following articles on free wil l. However, I will show a story of evolution. Power of free will in evolution There is some evidence for evolution. Whether we liked it or not. Consider the following. In time of industrial revolution, there had been lot of mines in some parts of Europe. And following demand for such unearthed material began to cease, at the end of the war, these mines were grossly abandoned. As it happened the domestic cats who used to be parttime entertainment for the workers were also abandoned. After some time, being in dark places, these cats evolved few generations. Once the mines were re discovered people were surprised to see, that these cats, were essentially blind, but had the ability to hunt and survive in the total darkness. A new cat species had evolved. It is difficult to assume that the evolution, only involved random mutations. Maybe the willpower of some consciousness is enough to make changes in the materialistic world. Willpower is an essential thing not only for evolution and survival. It is essential for us to function as humans, or animals. If someone loses their will to survive, in a matter of days they will be dead. Will is needed for you to get up and do some work, to prevent the hunger keeps coming back. Although it seems it is a futile process, the reasons behind this cycle of life are not yet broken, hence will keep on rolling. So, what drives the life? What drives the life is our choice. Our ability to like and dislike things is essential to every human and every animal. How tiny they are, there is a tiny will, to keep on living. When the nature betrays the will, they will tend to cheat the nature by reproduction. Evolution shaping our free will When we were first introduced to biology. First day, in the class we were taught that, the ultimate goal of all the animals and plants is reproduction. What does this mean? Once you have done your deed of reproduction, it doesn't matter you live or die. If you think you love your offspring because of your free will. I would say think twice. Can you not love your children? Occasionally we find that there are some souls which tries to go against the nature, and not love their offspring and their genetics will perish, just like their free will. It seems, at least evolution has shaped our free will, and our free will have shaped our evolution. It seems One is the reason for the other. So, what is this knowledge important for you and me? I think it is an evolutionary error that humans are capable of questioning their own willpower. But I hardly see anyone doing it reasonably, and you know why. The one who questions their own will, will understand the mechanics of life. And see the mechanism of the thoughts and understand the dragon scroll is empty . Just like the Camus suggested, whether we liked it or not, the life will drag on like the waves of the sea , like a floating leaf on water. Hence, this understanding will weaken their will. Consequence? Once weakened the will, will eventually disconnect from life. Instead of searching for happiness, such a consciousness will find peace, even in chaos. And disappear like a forest fire, which stops at the end of the sea, as it doesn't find anything else to burn. Will you take such a journey? With will of course!
- Deterministic world and free will - part 2
Recently it came to me the idea, that arguments of determinism and free will, there is a middle ground. When we look at the small components of life, or our day to day activities we see our actions carry something like a free will. As example since the day begin, you may have made some choices, like what to drink in the morning, a cup of coffee, a glass of water or some milk. You may have decided to go to work or be at home. But, when we look at the big picture, life seems to be a random walk, like the dog, the boy and the mathematician story. And more about these determinism and free will you will find in my previous article. I did not know much about it back then and the article end up without conclusion. And I think the conciousness is wiser a little better than those days that, we can try to answer the question of determinism vs free will, just a little push towards of more. Estern vs Western paterrn of thinking. If you read the article on wikipedia on determinism and free will you would find that it devides arguments into two sections. One ,western and one eastern. The westerns argue determinism and free will as two opposing arguments. However easterns argue (specially in buddhists according to wiki) that world is neither determinstic or free will. What does this mean, and what is the importance of knowing this. Can our practice of mindfulness answer such a question like determinism? Some examples of deterministic world and free will. Imagine our birth, and death. Which we have no control at all most of the time. We cannot chose the time and place we are born, and we cannot choose our death either. But, like we discussed earlier we choose or think we do, in between. And it seems microscopic activities it is true. But if we see the big picture, every action of ours start to create a snowball effect after sometime, (which is explained in chaos theory of life) that ultimately it is difficult to determine wheather it is good or bad. It seems what follows after seems true random. Too many variables to count after some time. Just like ripples in water, every action every tiny incident is inherently bound with everything happening everywhere, eventually. So, do we really have a free will in this chaos? or our thoughts are just some ripples which were determined by similar former actions which happened since the begining of time? This made me think, What if both determinism and true will are true at the same time? Imagine yourself. As long as you are not a hydrophobic leaf, you would think that 'you' have a free will. To the extent that you start an eternal search for some 'peace' some, 'status' some kind of a liberation. And this will of yours, (we can call it a desire) will continuesly feed for we will be there, just like a forest fire which keeps spreading, as long as there is wind, as long as there is dry grass and as long as there is desire. What will happen if there is a rain, even after months even after years. There will be a big rain, big enough, to put out the fire entirely. And it seems the life, has a free will. As long as there is fire, or life, there will be a free will. But once the fire is put out, there will be no free will, and there will be no life as well. Similarly death will be there, if there is life, and if there is no-one living, the death will no longer be there. Someone can argue that, well that is good for a fairly tale. Life is not as simple as jumble of words. And it is true. Life is not a jumble of words. I am sure the meaning of life, is not written not in English, and not in any other language that man made. We are fools if we think that it is. And if we look carefully you would see all we have done since our birth is jumbling our words. To identify a new meaning. Using same old words, that we used foreever, to get a meaning of happiness. If you read the article on language you would know, where we go wrong. Hence, I invite you to tap into your conciousness with new intutions provided by mindfulness to go beyond words and find the meaninging of life and death for yourself. It is not my story, you know what is happening in your story, and give it a rest from the eternal search. In summary deterministic world and free will, when we look at life we can see life is having features of both determinism and free will. And these are just concepts which themselves bounded by limits of language. Hence, neither is true or false. It is difficult to see the deterministic nature of life. Mindfulness is the science we use to understand our true nature.
- Choosing peace over Happiness - The Caucasian Chalk circle
The Caucasian Chalk Circle, Is a play by Bertolt Brecht, written in 1944. It’s a parable about justice and motherhood, set within the context of a land dispute in the Soviet Union after World War II . Plot The story begins with two Soviet collective farms arguing over who should control a fertile valley. To ease the tension, a singer tells the tale of “The Chalk Circle,” set in the country of Georgia. The main plot follows a servant girl named Grusha who rescues an abandoned baby, Michael, during a political uprising. Despite the dangers, she raises him as her own . Years later, the biological mother, Natella, returns and demands Michael back. The dispute is settled by a judge who uses a chalk circle to determine the true mother. The Judge draws a circle in chalk and ask two mothers to pull the child to them. When the child starts to cry in pain, Grusha gave up early letting Natella to win. Grusha’s genuine love and care for Michael are proven when she refuses to harm him, unlike Natella . This play highlight's themes of justice, sacrifice, and the true meaning of motherhood , in general. But it also hides some important philosophy about our mindfulness practice . Happiness Greed. Let's replace the child with happiness. It maybe the happiness you get from eating sugar. Listening to a song, or by taking a walk. It can be happiness you can buy from a shop or attain from meditation. It may be happiness which is drawn by an artist in a painting. It may come from your child, like in the play. Or from some close relatives or friends. Now, imagine you are playing against the nature. To win the happiness you must pull it towards yourself. If you win you are guaranteed some happiness. You will be able to enjoy a beautiful sunset, drinking your cocktail with a plate of baked fish listening to fine music in an elegant hut by the beach if you win. This is how we play the game. This is how we were taught to play the game. And I find this everywhere. Everyone talks about being successful. Being happy. Being in a continuous loop of growth and development. They follow the seven habits of successful people. Some twelve, to some, it is The Secret - Law of Attraction. But when you take a back, step back and look at the end game we see, that there is a barrier. We are not allowed to leave the courtroom with the prize that we intend to keep with ourselves forever. At the door, we are asked to drop everything we have gained. So, what would you do. Would you be wise enough to recognize, the game from the point of view of the Judge? Choosing peace over Happiness. The game, that we play in life, is just like the game in the Caucasian Chalk circle. The winners are not the ones who plays with greed. Winners are the ones who plays with pure intentions in heart. This must be emphasized and be carved into our information sphere from early life. So, if we are not allowed to bring our winning money to the next part of the game, maybe why put effort to win it at all? Someone may argue, no, with the winnings you can do better. You can help others to win their games. But is that all? Can we fool ourselves everything we do by pulling the happiness child is to help others in turn. That is to return it to the mother? Let's imagine you sit down to meditate. No, this time you decide you will want peace, not happiness from it. And you attain the peace, for some time, and you start to lose it. Then you get angry and ask why? did you play the game correctly? Maybe it was wrong, Wanting the peace is also wanting something. If the mind is working according to universal rules, then it is not ours by default to what happens in it. The moment you want to change its path you are trying to pull the child to yourself. Hence the greed is at work there before even you know it. Maybe the way to win the game is to lessen the power of the will. As the will is the one which keeps feeding the life.
- Just Do it - to be it
You are a writer when you write. You are a poet, when you poet. You are a Traveller, when you travel. You are a Joker, when you joke. You are a singer, when you sing You are a professor, when you profess You are a creator, when you create You are an artist, when you art You are a seeker, when you seek You are a thinker, when you think You are a sound, when you listen and You are a wise man, when you realize this! Just do it - to be it. It is a simple fact, but can have an enormous impact in life, in everything you do. I would explain a little bit more. But if you have read my previous article, you would understand that it is same as, saying " what you see is not what it is but who you are " Being Happy Let's get into details, of the benefits of knowing the fact. I can give you few examples. The other day I went to a daily boring task with my kids. While they were at it, I wanted to be happy. Then I realized, If I wanted to be happy, I am not "Happy". I'm just "want to be happy". And knowing this fact, just made me "Wise". And I simply became "the happy" You can try the trick, but more importantly remember the principle. It is not what is but who you are. Being a writer Today, when I started to write, I realized that I wanted to be a writer. I have dreamed of it over and over again. A professional writer. And I realized, the mistake now. It would never make me a writer. Wanting to be a writer would never make me a writer. I am writing just now. See,? I just wrote another sentence. I am already a writer. It makes the task more enjoyable and happier. There is a magical writer, in this consciousness, exact second of this. That is just to illustrate the fact that, wanting something is going to bring you sadness while, realizing what you are engaged in right now is, what brings happiness. Deep dive " Just do it - to be it." How can we put it in more practice? Let's say you are doing a daunting task, that you do not really want to do. You do not want to write that letter. Open that email or go to that meeting. Let's imagine that scenario. The meeting is coming up. At 10 o'clock and you are anxious that you have to do a presentation. You are being an introvert , do not like it at all. So, essentially what you are right now is 'Anxious'. And when you realize the fact that you are anxious, you will instead become wise. And anxious will have no place to stay in consciousness . And you even can drink a cup of coffee, to be a cup of coffee instead. There is an error when I put this thought into words. Did you notice it? I never said, there is, You- > anticipate You-> anxious You-> wise You-> a cup of coffee What you see is not what it is, but who you are. It is more like, -> Anticipate -> Anxious -> Wise -> A cup of coffee As ultimately 'You' are all these things(and not). This is one way to understand truths of nature. Now you will get some ideas about the little scarecrow story , previously I have written. Essentially, all this is just some practical advice to be more mindful and practice mindfulness with wisdom. Hope you liked it. Connect with the blog for more. A mountain Looking at a little mountain Feeling the breeze I realize happiness in not somewhere else It has to be here Now And I became a mountain.
